about

Kulning is the real voice of the North, the original kind of songs in the folklore music of Scandinavia. To describe this type of singing, it's like a kind of high screams added to a simple melody.

It is believed that kulning was invented to convene the cows and goats from high pastures. High-pitched sounds of kulning also scare away predators. There is also a theory that this type of song was used for long-distance communication and was one of the first ways that Scandinavians tamed their animals.

This kind of singing usually was used by women, because they grazed herds on pastures high in the mountains.
There are different types of kulning. Some of them could belong to a particular person or even to an entire family and were inherited. Thus, the herd knew the call sight of their masters.

Kulning was widely used by Northern residents in the middle ages. But today you can still hear these "shepherd's cries" echoing somewhere in the cold mountains of Scandinavia.
